The “I am a voter” contest rewards projects for democracy

For anyone (everyone) sick of the explosion of negativity in the run-up to the Nov. 8 midterm elections, it’s worth paying attention to the groups trying to inject as much positive energy as possible into this time. of the year.

One such nonpartisan coalition led by Souls to the Polls WI is harnessing the creativity of our state’s high school and college students, as well as recent graduates, to find new ways to deliver an old and important message:

Vote.

The I Am A Voter Scholarship Contest gives students and recent graduates a chance to win money for their education by designing social media graphics that will boost voter turnout in November. On the line are $10,000 in scholarships – two of $3,000 each and four of $1,000 each, which winners can use towards current or future tuition and tuition, as well as student loans.

As the October 14 contest submission deadline approaches, creative minds across the state still have time to come up with a high-impact, non-partisan design, 2D artwork, or illustrative video that encourages people to go to the polls for the midterm elections – and hopefully beyond.

AIGA, the oldest and largest professional design membership organization, oversees the competition, and its Wisconsin chapter is an official project partner.

“The [competition] is an opportunity for young, emerging designers and artists to apply their imaginations to spark civic engagement in our valuable democratic electoral process,” said Coe Douglas, Design for Good Chair of AIGA Wisconsin and Senior Lecturer at the Peck School. of the Arts from UW-Milwaukee.

“Art has always played a vital role in social change, often providing the very spark that ignites action. As educators, we can design a better future and use creativity as a tool to inspire young people voters, new voters, old voters, all voters, reminding them why their voice and their vote are important for our common future.
